The "Walk Around the Sun" is a Montessori birthday tradition.
To celebrate Birthdays at Noah's school, a candle is lit to represent the Sun. A card stating each month of the year is placed around the candle in order, and a small bowl with a beads is placed near their birthday month.
The child carries a globe and walks “around the sun” to represent the passage of each year. The child walks around the sun one time for each year he has been alive. After each full circle, he pauses on the month he was born to discuss what he was like at that age, and puts a bead in the bowl.
I brought in a homemade banner with pictures of Noah at 3 days old, 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 years and a recent one at "almost 6". The twins and I sat in circle with Noah's class and watched his special celebration, and sang Happy Birthday with them.
